Red Auerbach
October 31, 2008

The smell of cigar smoke still wafts through the air.

If you close your eyes you swear he is standing there.

Directing and leading another great Celtics team.

Teaching them how to achieve their championship dream.

He knew the game inside and out.

He knew what all his players were all about.

He could get the best out of everyone.

He knew how to motivate so the work got done.

His trades were legendary, he always got his man.

He knew the right player to execute his plan.

Red believed in teamwork, and playing the right way.

That was how the Celtics always ruled the day.

Red is surely missed, but it's like he's still here.

I'd love to sit down and buy him a beer.

And talk about Cousy, Russell, Havlicek and White.

Talk about how to win and playing ball right.

The Celtics are winning with a new generation,

But I can say this without hesitation,

It always begins with the core values Red started.

His winning tradition has never departed.

Red, you will always be the face of the organization.

Your example guides through all trials and tribulations.

So, thank you Red for all you have done.

You are the reason that we are always number one.

Red was basketball. I never liked listening to some tool talk ball but have you ever seen Red's tutorial videos? They actually show some still on NBATV. He was the greatest coach ever. Your poems are great!

Very nice poem about a fabulous man! I worked with Red when the Gastons owned the team. Its true-Red Auerbach hated cheerleaders and dancers in basketball. He wasn't a big fan of mascots either so Lucky was tolerated by Red. He told owners that as long as he was apart of the Celtics organization there would be no cheerleaders or dancers on the parquet. The day after Red died Grousbeck trotted out the Celtics Dancers. You could hear Red screaming from the great beyond. ...View More
